Good vibes for all in the big city (and beyond) – an interview with Geordie Numata

This is an interview of my friend and teacher, Geordie Numata, by Dave Gorczynski and Inoshi Denizen, the founders of the NY Reiki Conference. Geordie is based in New York City.

Mainstream Reiki Practitioner: Geordie Numata

What does Mainstreaming Reiki mean to you?
As Reiki practitioners, I think we all have a desire to share the gift of Reiki with our families and communities. We want everyone, without exception, to have the opportunity to learn about Reiki and experience its benefits. Thankfully, we live in a time when there are abundant opportunities to share Reiki in a wide range of settings in our communities and we can do this as volunteers, Reiki teachers and professional practitioners.

Where have you practiced that you would consider mainstream?
My practice is based in a very busy midtown wellness center where a wide variety of services, classes and events are offered. Many of the clients are partaking of our services as an adjunct to their medical care, often on the advice of their doctors.

I have also been providing Reiki and ear acupuncture at the Lower East Side Harm Reduction Center for five years and I am the Reiki team leader for the monthly free clinic for recovery from addictions at Third Root Community Health Center in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn.

In addition to this, I am one of the founding members of Healer2Healer, a group that has brought acupuncturists, Reiki practitioners and body workers to Guatemala and Peru where we have have provided under-served indigenous populations with free community clinics and training in Reiki, ear acupuncture and Chinese medicine.

To mainstream Reiki, what steps can you suggest to the Reiki community?
In order to mainstream Reiki, we need to find venues in our communities where the need for and value of Reiki is both recognized and welcomed. The opportunities to do this are increasing exponentially as more and more people from all walks of life experience the benefits of Reiki. This is happening in a wide variety of settings including hospitals, hospices, wellness centers, community clinics, private treatments, Reiki circles and Reiki classes.

What do you see on the horizon for Reiki?
I see a bright future for Reiki and I am especially excited about the prospects for more abundant support and funding for holistic and integrative low-cost community clinics as we shift into a more benevolent economic paradigm.

Next online session of Writing the Energetic Body begins March 11th!

Writing the Energetic Body – Shedding Inhibition and Divining Your Intentions – 28 Days of Writing Past the Mind and into the Chakras

New Moon in Pisces, Monday March 11, 2013 starts the next class!

New Moon is the time to plant intentions — combine that with fertile Pisces ruled by numinous Neptune and this is sure to be a very abundantly creative session.

topaz moon (c) Holly Troy 2012We will begin the session with an intention setting ritual and start our exploration at the crown chakra and work our way down to the root, the earth, our place of manifestation.

Get ready to explore possibility, make (re)discoveries, release inhibition, and develop a writing practice.

Overview of the seven major chakras of the Hindu Chakra System:

1st Chakra – This is our entrance into the earthly plane, our right to be in the world. We will investigate issues surrounding survival and our “tribe”.
2nd Chakra – This is where we experience the power of relationships. We will plumb pleasure, sexuality, emotions, and the desire to create.
3rd Chakra – This is where we gain our sense of personal identity, power, and will. Who are you? What is your purpose?
4th Chakra – We will open to compassion, self-acceptance, and love.
5th Chakra – We will look at clear communication, self-expression, creativity and “Divine Will”.  What happens when you speak your Truth?
6th Chakra – We will explore perception, clarity of vision, and psychic ability. How do you see the world? How does intuition and imagination expand your life experience?
7th Chakra – How do we understand the world? What is our connection to a Higher Power? We will investigate thought as the seed of manifestation and how the energy of this “ethereal” chakra can be brought “down to earth”.

Some of the benefits of taking part in Writing the Energetic Body:

  • compassionately and creatively observe the Self
  • uncover hidden impulses, stories, and life patterns
  • awaken the body/mind
  • utilize the breath for presence in the moment
  • deepen and expand creative vision
  • loosen up and strengthen fluid writing

energyThere is no need to “know” anything about the chakra system, our bodies physically and energetically hold information, and by freely writing we can tap into that knowledge.

Participants will receive daily writing prompts designed to stimulate a specific chakra for the given day in their in-boxes. They will spend 30 minutes only on the given prompt. They will return their responses via email to me. Participants will also have the chance to upload their work to a private blog site to share and to give and receive feedback from other participants.

I will personally respond to your work via email.

As an added bonus, participants also receive either written, audio, or video instruction for movement, meditation, or breath work that will deepen the prompt for the day. Participants may use the additional instruction however they choose—and it is theirs to refer to whenever they like.

The cost for the 28 Day Workshop is $72.00

invitation to write the energetic body

I’ve been dreaming chakras! Must be because my next online workshop is coming up in a little less than two weeks—they’re trickling into my subconscious.

Often, to write powerfully, even if only for ourselves, we have to move past what we “think” we should write. Have you ever asked yourself what your fears are about writing? Energy (c) holly troyYou don’t have to share your work with anyone, but if you are “dying” to tell a story and are afraid, chances are there is a part of you that is suffering for not letting it out.

  • Are you ready to let go of your intellectual understanding of what is “socially acceptable writing” and allow yourself to really say what you need to say?
  • Are you ready to let writing move through your body, into your energetic being, and trust what it’s saying to you?
  • Are you ready to release memories (or make up new ones), blocks, and sticky spots?
  • Are you ready for non-judgmental feedback, compassionate communication, and encouragement?

If you said “yes” to any of the questions above, then you are ready to participate in Writing the Energetic Body.

The cost for the 28 Day Workshop is $72.00

Healing in the World

Cauhide - siblings (c) Holly TroyLast year I had the opportunity to go to Peru with a group of alternative medical practitioners called Healer2Healer. Healer2Healer is an international organization based in New York City that brings volunteer alternative medicine practitioners – such as acupuncturists, Reiki practitioners, and medical massage therapists – to rural indigenous communities.

Before I went to Peru, I shared about what I was going to experience. Here is the gist:

In addition to five days of Community Clinic in Cauhide where H2H participants will work with Western and alternative practitioners in triage to treat the expected 2,500 to 4,000 patients from the local area, we will:
·       Take part in indigenous ceremonies,
·       participate in perma-culture activities,
·       stay at and learn about The Paititi Institute for the Preservation for the Amazonian Rainforest and Indigenous Culture,
·       experience lectures about healing on many levels and modalities,
·       and study indigenous traditions and natural medicine.

This will be an opportunity for me to aid and learn from a population that is un(der)-represented and often marginalized. I will also have the chance to learn and deepen my own healing practice and skills, and evolve as a human/spiritual being.

boats on the amazonTo this day, I am still experiencing the reverberations from that trip. It was a mind-body-and-spirit-blowing experience! I had no idea what to expect—I could not imagine the Amazon Jungle or the Amazon River, it just was not my reality. (I have spent most of my life living in NYC, and the last 5 years in the desert of AZ). Since this trip I have been contemplating my role as a reiki practitioner and teacher, an artist, and basically what it is to be a being on this planet (let alone a being in this city/region/country).

If any of you who read this are reiki practitioners, massage therapists, or acupuncturists who want to give in an extraordinary way, I highly recommend contacting Healer2Healer. Their work around the world is ever-expanding, and you may get to experience cultures that are changing faster than you can imagine. Not to mention, you will make some amazing friends.

Wisdom for Body, Mind, and Spirit

10 Things You Should Do Everyday is a simple list for living a good life.

I’ll start with number 10:

star (c) holly troy 10.      Forgive.

Almost every day presents us with challenging people or situations. These people and opportunities are put in our way because they serve to make us better people—if we allow it. So stop carrying old baggage around, and open yourself to the notion that every minute provides you the chance to start again—regardless of the date. Let yourself move forward—without the weight of burdens that don’t serve your best self.

To see the rest, check out Jennifer S. White’s article at Elephant Journal.

What is Reiki?

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese technique for deep relaxation and stress reduction that can speed healing, reduce pain, and decrease other symptoms of discomfort. It is a form of energy healing that uses a “laying on of hands” in order to direct Universal Life Force Energy or a form of Ki to the recipient. Hands are placed just off the body or are lightly touching the body.

Used as an “energetic tune-up”, reiki can be a soothing experience with the beneficial effects of deep relaxation, feelings of peace, security, and well-being. Used in conjunction with medical or other therapeutic techniques, it can help relieve side effects and promote recovery. Many people experience profound insights during and after a reiki session.
